Celestial Mechanics 2023

Celestial Mechanics is an art and science project by 5th class children of St. Philip’s SNS and artists Aileen Murphy and Mary Jo Gilligan. It is curated by Superprojects and commissioned by Fingal Arts Office on the occasion of Cruinniú na nÓg 2023.

On June 1st and 2nd 2023 children of the 5th class of St. Philip’s SNS took part in painting workshops at DIAS Dunsink Observatory, guided by the artists. Taking inspiration from the work done at DIAS Dunsink Observatory, the children were asked to think about the sky and what is in it, and use their ideas to create large paintings. Their paintings imagine their own personal sky above them, which they can take flight in through painting. Themes and ideas in the paintings include space, the stars, sun and moon, as well as imagined characters that might reside in the sky.

On Saturday 10th June the children’s paintings inspired by themes of astronomy were on display at Dunsink Observatory for Crinniú Na Nóg, the national day of creativity for children and young people. We invited the public to come and see these wonderful artworks and take a tour of the Dunsink observatory. Tickets were free and a picnic was included for participating children and their parents.
